History & Namesake

Lamar Elementary was opened in 1971, three years before the official founding of its community — The Woodlands, Texas.

The school is named for Mirabeau B. Lamar, who is known as the “Father of Texas Education.” Lamar was the second president of the Republic of Texas, establishing a fund to support public education and founding the Texas State Library.
